Zambia, Victoria Falls, South Africa and Botswana offer some of the finest game viewing within the continent of Africa and certainly the largest concentrations of animal to be found anywhere. Both are intertwined with the seasonal passage of animal along the migratory routes between the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania. Time of season is key should one want to view the vast herds gathering together to make passage to greener grasslands. The passage takes place from the Mara to the Serengeti starting in October – December, while in January – March the birthing period takes place in the Serengeti and thereafter, late June – September, the herds have moved once again back to the Mara.
The trek is totally dependent on how Mother Nature has planned the year’s rainfall or lack thereof. There is no exact timetable, rather a best guess seasonal transformation. Other factors play a role as well. A late rainy season or extended drought; poachers who might burn the grasslands to keep the herds in place while they gather their bounty or any number of factors could and do play a role in determining when the transition will begin. Even more difficult to plan is the sighting of a river crossing that sends thousands upon many thousands of wildebeests and zebra, along with their predators, across the Mara River. As spectacular as a sight it can be, seldom will locals, guides or travelers choose the perfect moment. It is sheer chance, all determined by sheer instinct and the determination to seek new grassland for survival.
The safari adventurer has numerous opportunities to get close to local wildlife in an intimate encounter only possible while on safari in Africa. It is an experience never to be forgotten; one that will form live time memories to be shared forever in time.
