Libya, situated in northern Africa, has been ruled throughout the ages by a number of foreign empires. The Greeks and Romans left impressive ruins at Cyrene, Leptis Magna and Sabratha. These ruins are only partially excavated, and unlike heavily exploited ruins in Greece and Rome, exist largely in their native state.

Grandeur of Lybia During the 7th century A.D., Arabs conquered the area, bringing with them Islamic art and culture. The Ottoman Turks followed in the 16th century and remained in power until the early 20th century when Italy colonized Libya. In 1952 Libya won independence from Italy and established a monarchy. The discovery of oil in 1959 changed Libya from a poor country into one of great wealth. Popular resentment grew as the oil income remained in the grasp of the ruling elite, while the rest of the country lived in poverty. In 1969, a small contingent of military officers led a successful coup against the king. One of these officers, Muammar al-Qadhafi, took over as head of the Revolutionary Council.

In the past, Qadhafi used his oil wealth to support actions against the Western world, including terrorist bombings in France and Germany and the downing of a Pan American Airline flight. Recently, however, Qadhafi has changed course, authorizing large restitutions to the victims and their relatives. He has opened Libya to UN inspections and Libya is on track to join the European community as a trade partner.
