Depart
the United States to the exciting continent of Africa into the historic
capital of Tripoli, Libya. Begin touring with a visit to the Red Castle
Fortress; its size and location speak volumes about its effectiveness
as a deterrent from attack by sea. Continue with a visit to the antiquities
museum, the lively medina and one of the more colorful souqs within
the city. A morning drive takes you to the World Heritage Site of Sabratha
to admire its magnificent Roman Theatre and one of the more splendid
Byzantine mosaics. Continue the next day to visit Ptolemais, founded
in the 3rd century B.B. and site for the remains of the Arch of Constantine.
Drive to Cyrene, the most important Greek city in North Africa. Visit
the Great Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Zeus. An excursion to Apollonia,
built by the Greeks when they were developing their naval merchant fleet
and to be used as Cyrene’s port city for over one thousand years,
is an essential part of the archeological complex of the region. Continue
your travels to Lepis Magna, one of the best preserved cities of antiquity.
Founded by Phoenician merchants, it is famous as one of the most extensive
Roman ruins in the Mediterranean. Stroll along the streets and view
the amphitheatres, imagining the city during its Golden Era.
A morning drive takes you across the fascinating Libyan Desert through
the Nafusa Mountains to the city of Ghadames, gateway to the Sahara.
It is an ancient caravan center and to this very day has maintained
a strict social fabric based upon age-old traditions. The city offers
